The Truitt – A Design Boutique Hotel in Kansas City

I absolutely adore small boutique hotels, and when possible, I will 100% choose one over a large, chain hotel, no matter the location. This year has been tough in that regard, but for our last trip of the year to Kansas City, I chose the tiny Truitt Hotel, a six room renovated mansion close to the Nelson-Atkins Museum for our 48 hour stint the first week of November, 2023.

The Location

The Truitt is located on the south side of Kansas City, Missouri, in the Country Club Hill neighborhood. It’s location is prime if you are visiting the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Country Club Plaza, a very nice shopping area modeled after Seville, Spain. You never need to wait long to get an Uber to get anywhere else in the city either, and pretty much anything else you want to see in and around KC is about a 10 minute ride. It’s in a great spot surrounded by other beautiful homes and the Kansas City Art Institute buildings.

The Amenities

The Truitt is truly a tiny boutique hotel and there are almost no amenities here. There are two lovely sitting rooms in the front of the mansion, which I called the black and white rooms. They are appointed beautifully with tasteful design choices, and chill music plays throughout the day.

There is also a coffee and snack area towards the back. For coffee, there is a shared, self-service Nespresso machine. They also have a bowl of madeleine cookies which are yummy. On Saturday night, they put out a bottle of white wine with some glasses for the guests, however we thought that the wine was totally undrinkable.

There are several sitting areas outside as well, but the weather was not really conducive to hanging out outside when we visited.

Service here is extremely minimal – you get an email with the code to the home and your room at 11am the morning of your check-in. The owners provide a phone number to call regarding any questions or issues. Housekeeping is also minimal during your stay. They pretty much come in and empty trash and replace towels only. They did not make our bed.

This place is a little more like an AirB&B than a hotel, apart from the fact that there is some minimal housekeeping service each day.

The Room

We booked a regular King Room which cost $460.00 for our two night stay. Our room was extraordinarily cozy with a lot of attention paid to the design. The bed was very squishy and comfortable – almost too squishy! On the bed, we were greeted with a hand written note from the owners and some local chocolates.

The bathroom was almost as big as the bedroom, and it looked as though the space was previously a 3-season room that was converted into a bathroom. The bathroom shower was enormous and open.

There was extraordinary attention to detail when it came to the design elements of the room. The only oversight is that the lighting in the bathroom is pretty terrible for putting on makeup, and there were no small mirrors or anything to assist. You had to lean over the very large sink to see yourself in the mirrors which was not super comfortable.

The Vibe

This hotel is a vibe as Gen Z would say. When you walk in, you feel as though you are walking directly into a high design magazine. Extraordinary care was taken into the design and renovation of this mansion, and it really shows. Funky music is playing in every room, and I would recommend taking some time to explore the different sitting rooms, and admiring all of the details throughout. The vibe is cool, luxe, and chill, and I was glad we had some time to spend just hanging out in the various rooms of the mansion.

The Recommendation

In spite of the lack of service and amenities here, for a short trip to Kansas City, I would highly recommend staying at The Truitt. This place is gorgeous and special, and really feels luxurious, for the price of an AirB&B. The location is excellent, and I just loved having The Truitt as our home base for this little trip.
