Amor Loco Restaurant, Nayara Springs, Costa Rica, February 25, 2023

Amor Loco restaurant is located at Nayara Springs within the sprawling Nayara resort in Costa Rica. This restaurant definitely wins for funkiest decor. Nayara Springs is the adults only section of the resort, and this restaurant is definitely geared towards romance. The vibe was like a hookah-lounge mixed with a steakhouse or bistro. There were plush velvet couches and chairs, purple, red and blue lighting, along with photos of all sorts of celebrities both old-timey and current, plastered along the walls.

On one end of the restaurant was a stage, and we enjoyed a live saxophone player and singer during our evening there. On the other end of the restaurant held the funkily-lit bar. Our service here was a bit more spotty than some of the other places. While our server was super nice and chatty, the timing of the food and drinks wasn’t super great. It was fine though, because we were enjoying lounging on the super comfy velvet chairs we were sitting on!

We were served a complimentary amuse bouche which was a beef tartare, along with a couple of cocktails. They also served up some delicious breads along with some infused olive oil and an olive tapenade. We loved the bread, especially the oniony focaccia so much, and this was the only place we went to that served bread, that we got a second helping. My cocktail was a super fun cocktail inspired by the rainforest. It was a martini that was very vegetal and had some lemongrass and cucumber infusion in it. It was also served in a special way on a tray that had some rocks, moss, and some smoke for effect.

To start, I had short rib ravioli and Brian had octopus. He said his octopus was really excellent. My ravioli were fine, but probably looked cooler than they tasted. They probably should not have been fried because they really were more just dried out instead of crispy.

For the mains, I chose the red snapper, and Brian ordered the Bouillabaisse, which were both delicious. The fish here, even though this place is inland, was fresh and excellent at all of the restaurants we ate at.

For dessert, we split what was basically mango three ways. I love mango, and this dessert really hit it out of the park.

Amor Loco was not our favorite restaurant of the week, but this doesn’t mean much because the restaurants on the resort were all impressive in their own ways. Here, the vibe is romantic and cool, and I wouldn’t suggest skipping it if you are looking for a very interesting place with a nice ambiance and live music.
