Historico Central Hotel: Affordable Luxury & Local Experiences in Mexico City
We stayed at Historico Central Hotel in Mexico City for three nights in February of 2024. I chose this hotel for the totally central location, as well as the very reasonable price for a large room. Once we arrived here, this stunning boutique hotel did not disappoint, and there were tons of extra nice touches that really added to the experience here. This hotel is in a restored, 300 year old building, and is really gorgeous when you step back to look at it. There are about 40 rooms here, and they pride themselves on authentic Mexican service.
The Location
This boutique hotel is located right smack in the center of the historic district of CDMX – you are only blocks from the Zocalo, restaurants, shops, and museums. If you really want to get the most out of your trip to CDMX, and are mostly interested in the historical sites and museums, you couldn’t find a more centrally located hotel. Now, if your primary goal is hanging out and eating and drinking in the upscale neighborhoods of Polanco, Roma, or Condesa, you are probably going to be taking Ubers to get there, and it’s going to take a while, since the traffic is bananas here. Pack your patience! We actually spent the days wandering around the historic district, and took Ubers to restaurants in other neighborhoods in the evenings. It was easy, even if super traffic-y, and the rides were quite inexpensive. While safety should always be a concern when you’re traveling, we felt safe here in a more touristy area. The hotel has security and their drivers that they hire (like to take you to and from the airport) also take measures to ensure that you are comfortable getting in a car with them.
The Amenities
We didn’t stay here long enough to enjoy everything this charming boutique hotel had to offer, but there are a few nice touches that set the hotel apart. First, breakfast is included in the price of the room. It is served a la carte and they have an extensive menu with basically anything you would like for breakfast. There are good pastries as well. I would recommend avoiding the coffee though. I’m not sure if there was something wrong with the machine when we were there, but the coffee smelled like old gym socks and tasted even worse. Luckily they do have espresso machines, and anything that you order that has espresso is perfectly good.
They also have a cafe on site that is open 24 hours, and everything except premium liquors and beers are also included. This is a great place to stop if you need a snack while touring, or just fancy having a cold beverage after a long day of walking around in the altitude. I can’t say I’ve ever seen a fully all inclusive cafe with food and beverages included at a hotel like this. Quite the luxe touch.
Tons of bottled water is on offer everywhere throughout the hotel on every floor, and apples are replenished daily as well. We were also given little snacks in our room. You will not go hungry staying here! There is also a gym on the first floor that is small, but has enough machines if you want to get a quick cardio work out in.
Finally, their concierge service is excellent and attentive. We were able to organize our rides from and to the airport at a very reasonable charge, and everything was on time, and very professionally and safely done. There are also free walking tours offered of the Historic Center of Mexico, I believe every other morning. Unfortunately, we had other tours booked, and did not experience the one this hotel offered, but this is also a really nice perk that is unique to this hotel.
The Room
The room was much larger than I expected, with very high ceilings, making it seem even bigger. We had two Juliet balconies with a nice view onto the street, which surprisingly, was not loud at night. There was a large desk area with a TV and plenty of storage.
The bathroom was small, but had a nice walk-in shower with excellent water pressure. They even included a host of amenities like razors and shaving cream, just in case you forgot. Everything was displayed on traditional ceramic, hand painted trays, adding some character to the otherwise modern furnishings.
The king sized bed was perfectly comfortable, and we slept really well. Between the altitude and the pollution, we were pretty much exhausted every day!
This room was the complete deal, and for under $200 a night, I would say an absolute bargain.
The Vibe
The vibe at this boutique hotel is bustling, yet tranquil at the same time. There always seem to be people coming and going and breakfast is busy. The atrium lobby area, however, is still somehow very chill. There is a large wall garden with all sorts of plants making it seem as though you’re outdoors, and with the ceilings going all the way to the top of the building with skylights at the pinnacle, it is always bright and cheery, even if the furniture and tiles are all quite dark. The staff is super helpful, always making sure that you have everything that you need. I really enjoyed the chic lobby and watching the guests come and go.
The Recommendation
I would highly recommend Historico Central Hotel for your stay in Mexico City, especially if your focus for tourism is in the historic district. You can walk everywhere here, and the location is perfect. The added amenities such as the free tours, included breakfast, as well as the complimentary cafe make this hotel a stand out for service and value. I wouldn’t hesitate to book!
