Matteo’s, A Great Pre-Show Bustling Bistro
We recently saw U2 perform at the Sphere in Las Vegas. You’ll definitely want to click here to read my article about our experience and snag some tips for when it’s your turn to go! Before any show, though, you need a good place to eat, and I chose Matteo’s at the Venetian Resort, which is located in “Restaurant Row,” one of the closest places to the Sphere that you can eat at the Venetian.
Keep in mind that if you come here before a show, it will be super busy and packed, but they are definitely ready for the gobs of pre-show diners. We booked our reservation for October 5 at 5:45 pm, about 2 hours before the show. This was plenty of time. The vibe here is bustling and busy and loud, but it’s also cute and fun. If you get here before 6, you will absolutely not be late for the show.
We ordered glasses of wine and appetizers right away, and opted for the creamy burrata. This was yummy, although maybe not the most amazing burrata I’ve ever had in my life. I would’ve also preferred that it be served with some kind of bread or toast, but it was delicious on its own along with the large slice of eggplant beneath it to give it a more savory touch.
For my main, I ordered agnolotti with with braised short rib. These pockets of pasta and super soft meat were delicate and delightful. The sauce was not overwhelming, and allowed the beef flavor to shine.
Brian had the casonzei which were also filled pasta with veal, pork and topped with pancetta. This was served with a light brown butter and sage sauce which perfectly complimented the sausage-y filling of these lovely dumplings.
For dessert we ordered the bread pudding which was a very generous portion of fluffy, fall apart bread, and a large scoop of accompanying vanilla gelato. This was super delicious and we really ate it up fast! I love a good bread pudding!
Interestingly, Matteo’s is basically the same restaurant as Brera Osteria, which I reviewed here following our other recent trip to Las Vegas in July. They share a kitchen, the pasta maker is the same, and they share staff as well. As far as which one to choose, I would say that Matteo’s has the slightly more expensive menu, though not by much. They also have more shared plates and focus on meat courses more than Brera. Brera has pizza, which they don’t serve at Matteo’s. Honestly, I think it mainly comes down to location. If you want to be part of the lovely vibe of St. Mark’s Square with its super “sky-high” celings, and if you have a hankering for some delicious hand-tossed pizza, go to Brera. If you want more of a cozy bistro vibe, and you’re thinking you’re going to want a bit more protein instead of carbs, opt for Matteo’s. Matteo’s is also much closer to the Sphere if you are going to a show. They are both super delicious, and relatively budget-friendly options at the Venetian!
