Peohe’s Restaurant, Great Views, Adequate Food
Coronado, California, USA
July 9, 2023
I was excited to try Peohe’s mainly because of the good reviews of the seafood online, as well as the amazing views that being right on the water, right across from San Diego, promised. The views most definitely delivered, but the food was pretty average, at best.
There is a free shuttle bus that drives the entire length of Orange Boulevard – the main drag of Coronado, about every 15 minutes during the summer. We hopped on the bus to get from the Hotel Del Coronado, where we were staying, to Peohe’s at the opposite side of the island. I would highly recommend using this shuttle bus while staying on Coronado!
Peohe’s is situated literally right on the water across from downtown San Diego, and the views here are really spectacular. We had a relatively early reservation at 6pm, so we were able to snag a table on the covered porch right on the water with awesome views. You can watch the giant container ships, as well as Navy ships float on by. The atmosphere here is really lovely.
The service was excellent too – our waiter had all sorts of suggestions and was always attentive. When we complained about one of the dishes, he was able to take it off of our bill, which was super nice.
The food was pretty average, though, and I would think for a bit of a pricier seafood place, the food would’ve been better. We got some rolls to start off with which were super fresh, warm, and delicious, and then the fried calamari and shrimp, which was most likely the best thing we ate. We were hungry and ate it so fast, I couldn’t get a photo! They also had excellent cocktails and zero proof cocktails for the kids, which they really enjoyed.
For my main, I ordered coconut shrimp, which was Peohe’s special, and I was super excited about it. Unfortunately, when it came, no one explained what all the sauces were, and my sauces got jostled and were all intermixed. The shrimp themselves were large, but nothing special, and definitely not as coconutty as I would’ve expected. The dish overall was quite bland. We also ordered the lobster mac and cheese which we were all excited about, but we all agreed was borderline inedible. The pasta was completely mushy and even the panko breadcrumbs didn’t have a crunch, which I wasn’t sure was even possible. We didn’t finish it, not even close, and this may be the first time that we have left any mac and cheese on the table. The server, though, was gracious, and removed the dish from our bill.
Eli ordered the grilled salmon, which he ate quickly and thought was good, though it didn’t seem any more special than what I could make at home. Brian ordered the prime rib, which was absolutely enormous and he said it was one of the best he had ever had. So, I guess if you’re in the mood for prime rib, definitely come here to check it out!
Overall, we really enjoyed the atmosphere and service here, but the food was mainly average, with a few stand outs. Come here for the view for sure, but don’t expect to have amazing quality food.
