Tmun Restaurant, Mgarr, Gozo, Malta, August 25, 2022
Tmun capped off an extremely busy and tiring day in Gozo, and it really was the perfect end to our day. I chose Tmun because it is located right in the harbor of Mgarr, Gozo, and its proximity to the ferry which we would need to catch to make it back home to Valletta. I had originally made a reservation for inside, but the evening was so incredibly perfect and beautiful, that the host obliged our request to sit outside instead. From the large outdoor patio area, you can see the lovely harbor with all the boats bobbing up and down adding a rhythmic and serene vibe to the setting.
I am going to start off by saying that Tmun was probably the absolute best value dinner we ate in all of Malta. We had extremely elevated food, and lots of it, as well as several bottles of wine and drinks as well as excellent service for under 200 Euro for three people. Of course, I wasn’t ordering the most expensive bottles (I always recommend staying local), but even still, an incredible bang for your buck.
We were provided a complimentary amuse bouche to start our meal which were these cute little tarts with about a billion flavors that all came together beautifully including cucumber, cream, and fish.
We then ordered a few appetizers that were all insanely delicious including a pumpkin seed risotto, cheese croquettes and melt-in-your-mouth spanakopita.
For our mains, I ordered the Panko Tempura Monkfish, which was perfectly crispy and complimented with smashed peas and mint. Brian ordered the slow-cooked lamb shoulder, which was gorgeously plated with a swish of harissa and yogurt. Anna had the beef duo which included a filet of strip loin and BBQ short rib. Each of our main courses were on the smaller side, but filled us up with a ton of protein to the point where we decided to skip dessert.
Unfortunately, we were unable to enjoy the vibe of the restaurant late into the night, nor sip on complimentary liqueurs that they offered to us because we were exhausted and we really wanted to make the 9pm ferry back to Malta. I was looking at a 45 minute drive (in the dark, through winding hills, with a manual transmission on the wrong side of the road) back to Valletta and I was not wanting to hang out an extra 45 minutes plus if we missed the ferry. So we paid our extremely reasonable bill and made a mad dash to the ferry, which we reached in plenty of time.
In my Gozo itinerary, I recommend staying overnight, and this is one of the main reasons why. You really want to take your time in Gozo – it’s super laid back, friendly and chill, and rushing out of one of the best restaurants we ate at in all of Malta to make it to the ferry seems counter to the attitude of the rest of the day. Even still, we loved Tmun for the chill atmosphere, incredibly beautiful and tasty food, and extraordinarily reasonable prices.
